April In Croatia

We rented the Spicy camper van for eight days in April. We were totally new to the camper van experience. It affords a whole new approach to holidaying.

Greg met us at the Venice airport as arranged and the process of familiarizing ourselves with the van was short and simple. Greg explained it all with humor and patience.

The van was very comfortable, very easy to drive and light on fuel and there are no hidden costs. Thought has been given to every detail and you have everything you need. The bed was cozy and the cooking facility convenient.

A personal comment: for us this vacation was an opportunity to de-stress, not being bound to a route, not having to look for accommodation every day. There is total freedom to drive ahead and see more, or just to remain at a campsite, take it easy and explore the area.

From Greg's home near Gorizia on the Italy-Slovenia border, the possibilities for different touring routes are endless. We chose to drive down to the Croatian coast.

The main places we visited were Opatija, the island of Krk, Senj, Plitvice, Zadar, the island of Murter, Šibenik, Trogir and Split. We decided to leave Dubrovnik for another visit because we didn't want to drive that far.

Of the campsites we stayed at, we recommend three that were outstanding – Camp Škver at Senj, Camp Borje which is an easy 15 km from Plitvice and Camp Stobreć just south of Split. At Stobreć we decided to rent a bungalow (not much more expensive than staying in the van) and treated ourselves to the luxury of a private toilet and shower.

We discovered that one of the fun features at the campsites was the friendliness of the other campers.

Although the Plitvice National Park is a bit out of the way and some tourists prefer to stick to the scenic coastal roads of Croatia, we found the waterfalls at Plitvice to be the highlight of our trip and recommend not to miss out on this experience.

A word of advice: it is worthwhile to subscribe to one of the European Campsite Associations. Not only do you get up-to-date information on campsites in your vicinity but it also entitles you to a price reduction.

The whole process of renting the van was both efficient and very friendly.Greg gives plenty of good advice and goes out of his way to be helpful.

Without hesitation, we highly recommend Spicy Campers.
