Climbing and Mountain Biking in Slovenia

Greg picked us up from Koper bus station and once we had the administrative matters sorted out we headed to a good camping ground just along the road from his house - Camp Lijak at Ozeljan. We stayed a few days to rock climb around Vipava and I did some great runs around and above Smihelj. Nice walks very possible in this area. A number of good eating options including the Grad pizza and Slovenian food place in the village above the camp ground. Loved this area.

Then we headed up toward the Austrian border to Jamnica to do some mountain biking with Dixie and Anej of Mountain Bike Nomad. Notwithstanding the additional challenges of driving on what (for us) on the wrong side of the car and the wrong side of the road, we found our way and enjoyed their hospitality (great Slovenian food) for a couple of days. While we were in this area we found a great little (rustic) camp ground at Mitnik near Podpeca where we stayed whilst we did some climbing. We had some great traditional Slovenian dinners in the dining room, which we shared with the children who attend the horse riding camps on the property. Narrow roads to this venue were a challenge for us! Loved this area.

Then we headed south east to Prebold where we stayed at Camp Dolina (good) and climbed at some very good (shady) cliffs in the area. Bike riding seems to be a popular visitor activity in this area but apart from the fantastic climbing I can't say that this was one of our favorite areas in Slovenia.

We were very sad to take the Spicy Camper back and finish our holiday, but Greg took us via the scenic coastal route into Trieste so that was some compensation. It was great having the camper as we could decide where we wanted to go according to the weather and our inclination - so flexible!
