11 Days Around Croatia
by Eugene and Diane
Spicy Camper Van Rental Cruising Croatia.
Just returned from an amazing road trip in a Spicy Camper van along the Croatian coast. We were promptly picked up by Greg at Trieste airport and taken to his home in Slovenia to collect the van. After a short time going through paperwork and becoming familiar with the van we were on our way.
Day One -We firstly drove to Novigrad on the west coast of Istria, staying in Autokamp Kastanija right on the beach!
Day Two - Visited Rovinj, a stunning little town on the west coast of Istria. We stayed in Premantura, right at bottom tip of the Istrian peninsular. Walked into the little town for dinner at a great little restaurant overlooking the square.
Day Three - Visited Opatija and walked 2km along the coast to Voloska. Opatija favorite place so far. Amazing buildings and villas. Drove to Senj and stayed at Kamp Skver. Wonderful camp site with the most amazing views and sunset.
Day Four - Drove to Zadar along the highway. Zadar had lots of historic buildings. Walked to the top of the tower in St Donat's church. Wonderful town with people sat drinking coffee and people watching. The Sea Organ was well worth a visit. Drove to Murter Island and stayed in Kamp Slanica right on the bay. Beautiful!
Day Five - Headed off to Šibenik. Lovely town with the most amazing Cathedral. Visited Krka National Park with stunning waterfalls and then headed off to Trogir a beautiful heritage site. Trogir was our favorite place of the whole trip. So pretty with little winding streets. Drove to Split and spent the night at Autokamp Stobrec-Split. Great camp site, again right on the beach.
Day Six - Set off to Dubrovnik along the coast road. Stopped at Brela, a lovely little port and Mali Ston, an oyster farm. After a very long day driving, we set up camp in a little camp site in Trsteno, Camp Trsteno. This was the only camp site on our trip which didn't have great facilities. Was also right across from a beautiful little church whose bells rang on the hour and half hour all through the night! Would recommend Autocamp Solitudo-Dubrovnik just outside Dubrovnik instead, plus there is a bus service into Dubrovnik there.
Day Seven - Visited Dubrovnik. Absolutely amazing! Walked the city walls and walked around the old town then set off back to Split on our way back up on our second half of our trip in order to get to Slovenia in time to return the van. This time we drove along the highway rather than coast road. Trip much shorter this time !! Stayed in Autokamp Sobrec- Split again as we both really liked the restaurant on the camp site and their facilities.
Day Eight - Visited Split. Split was a pleasant surprise. Had read that it was more commercialized than other towns but we both absolutely loved the old town. We then headed back to Senj to Kamp Škver as first time round we didn't have time to visit the town with an old fortress. Plus we both loved the views from this campsite.
Day Nine - We decided to spend the last couple of days in Italy so we drove to Trieste. Trieste beautiful but we were both shocked at how much more expensive Italy was compared to Croatia. Stayed the night in Mestre at Camp Venezia as we wanted to be near Venice for a visit on our last day. Mestre was lovely - great food market whilst we were there. Had a fabulous Indian curry (we were both craving a curry by Day Nine!!!)
Day Ten - Caught the bus just outside campsite for a short ride in Venice. Venice of course was stunning but very very busy compared to the places we had visited on our trip. We had intended to stay for the evening for dinner but having spent all day sightseeing and battling the crowds we decided to go back to the campsite and relax. Had the best pizza of our trip at the little restaurant on the site.
Day Eleven - Spent a couple of hours cleaning the van with the great facilities on the site and set off back to Slovenia to drop off the van.
Sorry this is so longwinded, but just thought it would give anyone out there an idea of exactly how much you can see in 11 days!!
The van had everything you could possibly require for a road trip. The bed was amazingly comfortable. All the campsites we stayed in were right on the beach apart from the one in Trestno and Italy, so it was lovely to wake up to the sound of the sea and to watch the sunsets/sunrises from the van. All the campsites had fantastic restaurants on site so no need to walk into town in the evening.
We can't recommend Spicy Campers enough. Lovely people and the whole hiring of the van was efficient and easy. Can't wait to do it again!!
