Lake Bled Slovenia is one of those classic destinations that you will most likely encounter when searching for information about your next travel to Slovenia. The postcard images of the lake with the small island in the middle and the Julian Alps and Karavanke mountain range in the background are simply breathtaking. But is the lake really so beautiful?
Well you bet it is, because the emerald green lake and the island with the church in the middle of it are really what you see on the pictures. Lake Bled Slovenia is one of those pretty places Slovenia uses for promotion to the outside world.
It's a wonderful place to enjoy throughout the year, with a touch of the 70's, a castle on the high rock above the lake and one of the best camping places in the country. Do to it's popularity, it does get crowded in the summer and we do always recommend spring or fall as they are always our favorite seasons.
The best and healthiest way to discover the lake, town and its surroundings is by foot. There are numerous marked and well maintained footpaths around the lake or up to the castle. If you need some peace and solitude for your soul, the nearby hills offer plenty of it and you will enjoy the finest views of the area. Please ask for the walking path mini guide at the local Tourist Office.
Lake Bled is naturally and mostly about water. It's a well known Rowing Center, where many of our finest athletes were shaped out to perfection, winning the Olympics and other competitions. A ride in the traditional old style "Pletna" wood boats to the island is almost a must here. And if you just need to rest and swim around for a while, join in on one of the beaches around the lake.
If you're more of a town person, take a stroll around through the well known villas, town parks and cafes such as Park Caffe, serving the famous cream cakes for decades now. Good timing will allow you to catch one of the local festivals or open markets. And when was the last time you went for a horse carriage ride? Well, you can take a coach ride called the "Fijaker", which is another well kept tradition here.
Lake Bled in Slovenia is just a short drive from the larger and, for our taste even prettier than lake Bohinj and the Triglav National Park. Turning of the main road between Austria and Ljubljana, you can visit them both in a matter of days. While Bled aims to be a more of a classic high end resort, Bohinj takes care for the more outdoor paradise adventure seeking souls.
They both offer more than enough possible activities such as hiking, biking and various water-sports plus a couple of adrenaline sport parks. And when the day is done, drop in to one of the local restaurants for a taste of local cuisine in order to keep you going on. Take our word for it, you won't be disappointed.
